Introduce yourself (name, company, position, country) and tell us how you got into lighting design (including education/qualifications).

Hi, my name is Shefali Chavan, and I work in Specification Sales at iGuzzini/ Sistemalux, Toronto.

My journey into the lighting industry began with a strong design foundation. I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, which first introduced me to the importance of lighting in shaping built environments. Wanting to deepen my understanding, I went on to pursue a Master’s degree in Lighting Design from the New York School of Interior Design, where I developed both the creative and technical aspects of lighting from visual perception and human-centric design to advanced lighting systems.

After moving to Canada, I transitioned into the industry through sales, working as an account manager and sales representative. This shift allowed me to understand the manufacturing, business and client- side of lighting. I gained a deeper understanding of products, market needs, and how design concepts are translated into real-world applications.

Over time, I’ve developed a passion for bridging design with practical application, and I really enjoy being part of an industry that combines creativity, technology, and client-focused solutions.

Tell us about your work – is there a specific type of project you like to work on or an area you specialise in and why?

In my role, I work closely with architects and lighting designers, supporting them in selecting the right products to meet their design intent. I particularly enjoy this collaborative process in understanding the vision behind a project and then helping translate that into practical, effective lighting solutions. A big part of what I do involves problem-solving, whether it’s finding the right fixture for a specific application, working within constraints, or ensuring the design can be executed as intended.

I find it especially rewarding to guide clients toward solutions that not only meet technical requirements but also enhance the overall design. Being able to bridge the gap between concept and product is what I enjoy most about my work.

What project are you most proud of and why?

I’ve had the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects throughout Canada and USA, and it’s hard to choose just one that I’m most proud of. What stands out to me is the collective experience of collaborating with architects, lighting designers and engineers across different project types.

The projects I’m most proud of are those where I was able to play a key role in problem-solving, helping clients find the right lighting solutions that align with their design intent while also meeting technical and practical requirements.

What is the biggest challenge that you have overcome in your career?

One of the biggest challenges I’ve overcome in my career was transitioning from a design-focused background into a sales and manufacturing role after moving to Canada. Coming from architecture and lighting design, I was initially more focused on the creative and technical aspects. Moving into sales required me to develop new set of skills - like building client relationships, understanding market dynamics, and confidently communicating product solutions.

Over time, I was able to adapt by leveraging my design background as a strength. It helped me better understand client needs and offer more thoughtful, solution- oriented recommendations. This transition ultimately shaped my career in a very positive way, allowing me to bridge the gap between design and practical implementation. Today, that combination is one of my biggest strengths.

How does light inspire you?

What inspires me about light is its ability to completely shape how we experience a space. As James Turrell says, “Light is the medium of the mind,” and I really connect with that idea. Light isn’t just about visibility but about emotion, perception, and storytelling. The way a space feels can change entirely depending on intensity, color, direction, or layering, and I find that incredibly powerful.

I enjoy the challenge of translating a designer’s vision into lighting solutions that work both aesthetically and practically. For me, the most rewarding moments are when a well-thought-out lighting solution not only solves a technical problem but also enhances the atmosphere and leaves a lasting impression on the people experiencing it. That combination of creativity, problem-solving, and human impact is what keeps me passionate about this field.

What is your message for other Women In Lighting?
