Andrenna D’souza
Designer, Consultant, Entrepreneur
United Arab Emirates - Dubai
Introduce yourself (name, company, position, country) and tell us how you got into lighting design (including education/qualifications).
I am Andrenna D'souza, the founder of Studio Aurora, a boutique lighting design firm based in Dubai, UAE. My journey in the field of lighting design began in 2007 when I started working as a lighting designer for ERCO Lighting. Since then, I have gained valuable experience by working with various design firms. In 2021, I decided to take a leap of faith and establish my own design studio.
My educational background includes a degree in Interior Design, where I had the opportunity to delve into the intricacies of lighting design. As part of my studies, I learned about the technical aspects of lighting, such as illuminance and lux levels for different spaces, along with various lighting techniques. It was during a presentation by a seasoned professional that I truly grasped the essence of lighting design. I discovered that lighting goes beyond meeting lux levels; it has the power to influence people, architecture, activities, and even the ambiance at different times of the day. A simple flick of a switch can transform a space from tranquil and soothing to vibrant and dynamic.
Tell us about your work – is there a specific type of project you like to work on or an area you specialise in and why?
My career began in the realm of retail lighting design, where I quickly realized the profound impact that lighting can have on the perception of a space. In a bustling room, how can you guide the viewer's gaze towards specific objects?
As a retail lighting designer, I discovered the significance of utilizing colour temperatures, colour rendering, and visual hierarchy to accentuate different elements within a space, whether they are tangible or intangible. Since then, I have transitioned into the hospitality and residential sectors, and these have become my primary areas of expertise.
What I find most fulfilling about working in these fields is the strong human connection that is established. I take pleasure in designing spaces that are specifically crafted for people to unwind, recharge, and escape from the demands of everyday life. This allows me the opportunity to push boundaries, think creatively, and challenge conventional norms while creating an unforgettable environment and experience. As a designer, I am able to explore a wide range of lighting techniques, all while ensuring that the overall ambiance remains harmonious and cohesive.
What project are you most proud of and why?
There are numerous projects that I take pride in. One of the first projects that I worked on was Giordano Concepts, which introduced a new concept of high-end, sustainable fashion in classic styles. It was the first high-end store of its kind and stood out at the newly opened Dubai Mall in 2008 with its unique design language of high contrast, accent lighting, and low ambient lighting.
Another project that I am extremely proud of is the Address Fountain Views, a mixed-use development that taught me the importance of collaboration with various stakeholders.
Lastly, W Mina Seyahi was a significant project for me as it was the first where I was involved from concept design to project handover, allowing me to learn valuable lessons about design and attention to detail. I gained extensive knowledge from that project in terms of design and analysing elements from a unique standpoint. It made me realize that what appears feasible on paper can present challenges in reality. Moreover, it emphasized the importance of considering every minute detail during the conceptual phase. This project truly pushed me to think creatively and utilize lighting as a pivotal factor in shaping the ambiance and aesthetics of the space.
What is the biggest challenge that you have overcome in your career?
The most significant obstacle I have faced is gaining confidence in defending my design choices as a lighting designer. Many individuals I collaborate with often discuss lux levels, but as an experienced lighting designer, I know that lux levels are merely a measurement parameter. They do not determine the success of a project's lighting design. Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work on diverse projects that defied conventional lighting level standards, yet still fulfilled the design brief or project requirements. Therefore, I believe the greatest challenge lies in effectively communicating to others that lighting encompasses more than lux levels; it is about perception and perspective.
How does light inspire you?
I, as a designer, observe the impact of lighting on human well-being and space transformation. Light, to me, is a form of communication that can subtly convey messages. Take, for instance, the contrast between sunrise and sunset; sunrise symbolizes fresh starts, while sunset signifies winding down and unwinding. By studying natural light, our energy levels fluctuate throughout the day, and the integration of artificial light in all environments has revolutionized our daily routines. This innovation has motivated us to think outside the box and approach tasks in new ways.
What is your message for other Women In Lighting?
My suggestion for my fellow women in the lighting industry is straightforward: Have faith in your skills, cultivate your vision, and embrace your distinct perspective in the world of lighting. I embarked on my lighting journey after graduating in interior design, and it sparked my love for the art of illumination. Lighting goes beyond just technical aspects; it is a tool to comprehend how light can deeply impact individuals, change environments, and establish unforgettable moods.
