Introduce yourself (name, company, position, country) and tell us how you got into lighting design (including education/qualifications).

Hello! My name is Magali Suchowolski and I am an Industrial Designer and Lighting Designer in Argentina.

I have a decorative lighting company called Mags Design. We design and produce our 100% National Industry products.

Our mission is to always be at the forefront of design, challenging creativity and setting trends in materials, finishes and colors.

Prioritizing giving the customer a top quality product at an electrical and aesthetic level.

I began my studies in Industrial Design in high school, a specialization that I did not like at that time, until I had to carry out the project of designing a lamp and a perfume bottle, and at that time, my goal was to enter the University of Buenos Aires to study this career.

Before graduating, I wanted to start my professional experience and I looked for a job in a well-known design and lighting store in Argentina, a store that every day I passed through the door, I only wish I could work there. And I did it, working on it for 6 years.

In between, I did several training sessions at OSRAM and PHILIPS on new lighting technologies and technical information, then I took an Interior Design course taught by the Higher Institute of Integral Design to add knowledge in the field of decoration.

Tengo una empresa de luminarias decorativas que se llama Mags Design. Diseñamos y producimos nuestros productos de Industria 100% Nacional.

Tenemos la misión de estar siempre a la vanguardia en el diseño, desafiando la creatividad y marcando tendencias en materiales, terminaciones y colores.

Priorizando darle al cliente un producto de primera calidad a nivel eléctrico y estético.

Comencé mis estudios de Diseño Industrial en el secundario, especialización que no me gustaba en aquél momento, hasta que me tocó realizar el proyecto de diseñar una lámpara y un frasco de perfume, y en ese momento, mi objetivo fue entrar a la Universidad de Buenos Aires para estudiar dicha carrera.

Antes de recibirme, quise comenzar mi expriencia profesional y busqué trabajo en una tienda de diseño e iluminación muy conocida en Argentina, tienda que cada día que pasaba por la puerta, sólo me daba deseo de trabajar ahí. Y lo logré, trabajando en ella 6 años.

En el medio realicé varias capacitaciones en OSRAM y PHILIPS sobre nuevas tecnologías en Iluminación e información técnica, luego hice un curso de Diseño de Interiores dictado por el Instituto Superior de Diseño Integral para sumar conocimientos en el rubro de la decoración.)

Tell us about your work – is there a specific type of project you like to work on or an area you specialise in and why?

I found my passion in wood, I love wood in every way. I love the warmth that it gives to the environments, its aesthetics and variety in colors, veins, finishes that each one has. The way of working it is something that also leaves me in love.

And that's where I focus a large part of my work, on designing hand-turned wooden luminaries, sinking into the magic trade of the turner, trying to keep it alive!

They mainly choose my luminaires for their homes, you can also find them in offices, restaurants and commercial premises.

Encontré mi pasión en la madera, amo la madera en todos los sentidos. Me encanta la calidez que le da a los ambientes, su estética y variedad que hay en colores, vetas, terminaciones que tiene cada una. La forma de trabajarla es algo que también me deja enamorada.

Y ahí enfoco gran parte de mis trabajos, en diseñar luminarias de madera torneadas a mano, hundiendome en el oficio mágico del tornero, intentando mantenerlo vivo!

Mis luminarias principalmente las eligen para sus viviendas, también podés encontrarlas en oficinas, restaurantes y locales comerciales.

What project are you most proud of and why?

The product that I am most proud of having designed is the Wood table lamp. Although most of my designs are made of wood, this product was more difficult to produce, considering that we make them by hand. It took me over a year and a half to get the product to market.

Currently I'm still looking at the Wood table lamp and its mini version, and I'm still very excited.

On the other hand, I can also say that the moments that give me a lot of pride are the fairs, both national and international. It was a challenge to start being in them and I am very proud of the feedback and comments that people have given me when they see my luminaires.

In Argentina we are every year in fairs, a moment that we love to be able to share that unique moment with our clients. But the experience of being at international fairs, such as 100% Design in London and Maison & Objet in Paris, and presenting our product lines was an even greater pride.

El producto que me da más orgullo haber diseñado es el velador Wood.

Si bien la mayoría de mis diseños son de madera, este producto tenía mayor dificultad de producción, teniendo en cuenta que los hacemos a mano.

Me llevó más de un año y medio lograr lanzar el producto al mercado.
Actualmente sigo mirando el velador Wood y su versión mini, y me emociona mucho aún.

Por otro lado, puedo decir también, que los momentos que me dan mucho orgullo son las ferias, tanto nacionales, como internacionales.
Fue un desafío comenzar a estar en ellas y me da mucho orgullo la devolución y los comentarios que me ha dado la gente al ver mis luminarias.

En Argentina estamos cada año en ferias, momento que amamos al poder compartir con nuestros clientes ese momento único.

Pero la experiencia de estar en ferias internacionales, como 100% Design en Londres y Maison & Objet en Paris y presentar nuestras líneas de productos fue un orgullo aún mayor.

What is the biggest challenge that you have overcome in your career?

The biggest challenge that I have overcome in my career was to stop working in a dependency relationship and start my project, my own business and get out of my comfort zone.

Creating my company and showing everyone my designs was I think the biggest challenge.

El mayor reto que he superado en mi carrera fue dejar de trabajar en relación de dependencia y comenzar mi proyecto, un emprendimiento propio y salir de mi zona de confort.

Crear mi empresa y mostrarles a todos mis diseños fue creo el reto más grande.

How does light inspire you?

Light inspires me from the important place it has in any project that is made and designed.

It seems to me a fundamental element in our lives. A luminaire emits light and the role it has in an architecture project or interior design is very important in it, whether it is a home or a commercial premises.

Complete the environment, highlight every detail on it.

If the environments or objects are not well lit, they do not shine, they are not seen.

And so, every project loses meaning.

Light creates climates and allows different experiences to be lived.

And in addition to giving each product a specific light effect, I try to add a different, decorative aesthetic, a piece of art.

La luz me inspira desde el lugar importante que tiene en cualquier proyecto que se hace y diseña.

Me parece un elemento fundamental en nuestras vidas. Una luminaria emite luz y el rol que tiene en un proyecto de arquitectura o en un diseño interior es muy importante en él, ya sea una vivienda o un local comercial.

Completa el ambiente, resalta cada detalle en él.

Si los ambientes u objetos no están bien iluminadas, no se lucen, no se ven.

Y así, todo proyecto pierde sentido.

La luz crea climas y permite vivir diferentes experiencias.

Y además de darle un efecto de luz determinado a cada producto, intento sumarle una estética diferente, decorativa, una pieza de arte.

What is your message for other Women In Lighting?

The best message I can give them is to be encouraged to design, to be encouraged to project light and begin to change things.
