Introduce yourself (name, company, position, country) and tell us how you got into lighting design (including education/qualifications).
Hello! I’m Archanaa Pradhapan, a lighting designer at P2S Inc. in California. My journey into lighting began with my undergraduate degree in architecture from a college affiliated with Savitribai Phule Pune University, India followed by a master’s in architectural engineering from Penn State University. It was during my undergraduate studies that I developed a passion for lighting design, particularly influenced by an elective on set design and my final thesis project focusing on a spiritual retreat center, where lighting played an important role.
Tell us about your work – is there a specific type of project you like to work on or an area you specialise in and why?
I work in various sectors, including education, hospitality, commercial, healthcare and public spaces. I particularly enjoy projects that enhance community environments, where I can blend aesthetics with functionality and sustainability. Achieving this balance is crucial for creating spaces that are not only visually appealing but also promote well-being and energy efficiency.
What project are you most proud of and why?
One project involved revamping the lighting for several public parks in Portland, OR. Our goal was to reduce light pollution while ensuring effective illumination for pathways and gathering areas. Witnessing the positive impact of lighting design on the community—creating safer and more inviting spaces for families and individuals—was incredibly fulfilling.
As part of this initiative, the fixtures were designed to be Dark Sky-friendly and fully shielded to prevent light pollution. They were directed specifically at park pathways, minimizing light directed toward neighboring homes. The new light poles and fixtures were carefully selected to closely replicate the existing ones, and the lighting was programmed to automatically operate from dusk to dawn.
What is the biggest challenge that you have overcome in your career?
One of the significant challenges I faced was establishing a clear career path in the emerging field of lighting design. Being away from my family in a foreign country contributed to my uncertainty, particularly as an introvert in a close-knit industry that emphasizes networking and interpersonal skills.
Over time, I discovered that the lighting community is both friendly and supportive. Embracing authenticity has enabled me to forge meaningful connections. This shift in perspective has made my journey more manageable and rewarding, allowing me to navigate the complexities of the field with resilience.
How does light inspire you?
Light inspires me by its profound ability to influence space and emotions. I love how thoughtful lighting design can transform an environment, enhancing the way people interact with and experience their surroundings. It is a powerful tool for storytelling and creating mood.
